(Black)-American

  • Calypso Fine Art Gallery (map)

(Black)-American which explores artist expression regionally as the show creates a journey between the South African artworks with Jacksonville artists. I pair the two using work by Angolan artists Anderson Goncalves and Maria Jamba as a bridge into Caribbean expression with works from Weldon Ryan depicting Carnival. Then the space moves to work by artists who are African Descendants of Slavery; Ahyanna Nakia, Adrian Rhodes, Shady Francois, and Teresa Cooke. (black)-American is a perfect fit for the summer as we examine the journey to freedom for African Descendants of Slavery in the midst of Juneteenth, The Fourth of July, and Jacksonville’s Carnival in August.
